Thessaloniki, Greece's second city and the capital of its north, wears its history in layers: a Roman imperial capital under Galerius, the Byzantine empire's second city, Ottoman for nearly five centuries, then largely rebuilt after the Great Fire of 1917 to a French architect's plan. The centre is small enough that a 4th-century rotunda, a Byzantine church and a 1920s arcaded square all sit within a few minutes' walk of each other.
