Helsinki 4K Walk: City Center Exploration

Helsinki's railway station looks like nothing else in the city, and that was deliberate. Eliel Saarinen won the competition to design it in 1904, and when it opened in 1919 its granite face — all rounded arches, a soaring clock tower, and vertical lines, National Romantic style at its most confident — became the template for a whole generation of Nordic public buildings. Four Lantern Carriers, giant granite figures holding glowing globes, flank the main entrance; carved by sculptor Emil Wikström in 1914, they've been the unofficial meeting point for Helsinki residents for over a century. Today the station is Finland's most-visited building, used by around 200,000 people every day.

From the station, the walk crosses into the shopping heart of the centre, past Forum and its stores before reaching Stockmann, the department store that has anchored this stretch of Aleksanterinkatu since 1862. The current building — Nordic Art Deco, designed by Sigurd Frosterus — was inaugurated in 1930 and remains the largest department store in Northern Europe, a scale that's easy to underestimate from the street until you're inside it.

The rest of the walk moves through the ordinary texture of central Helsinki rather than another single landmark — shops, passersby, the kind of city-centre density that doesn't photograph as well as the station or the department store but is what actually fills most of an afternoon here.
