Amsterdam to Athens Flight: Aegean Airlines Journey

This flight covers roughly 2,400 kilometres of Europe in under three hours — Amsterdam's flat, grey lowlands giving way, eventually, to the blue of the Aegean and the sun-bleached hills of Attica. It's Aegean Airlines' Amsterdam-Athens route, filmed the way most passengers actually experience it: through a window, with nothing but the sound of the engines.

The descent begins above a solid layer of winter cloud somewhere over southeastern Europe, the kind of white that gives no hint of what's underneath. It breaks apart gradually as the aircraft crosses onto the Attica peninsula, revealing dry hills, scattered white buildings, and the sea on more than one side — Attica is nearly surrounded by water, which is part of why Athens has always been a maritime city as much as a landlocked one.

The runway belongs to Athens International Airport, officially Eleftherios Venizelos, which opened in March 2001 in time for the 2004 Olympics and replaced the old Ellinikon airport closer to the city centre. It's named for the Cretan-born statesman who served as Greek prime minister across several terms in the early 20th century and helped shape the modern Greek state after the Balkan Wars and the First World War — a name Greeks encounter constantly, on street signs as often as on arrivals boards. The airport is also Aegean Airlines' home base, which makes this landing, in a small way, the airline coming home.
