Amsterdam Summer 2023 City Center Walk

Amsterdam's centre is built on the idea that the water came first. This walk starts at Waalseiland, a man-made islet by Centraal Station that is a reminder the entire old town sits on land reclaimed from a river mouth, then follows the historic core from the station to Dam Square along streets that have carried foot traffic for eight hundred years.

Centraal Station itself opened in 1889, designed by Pierre Cuypers — the same architect behind the Rijksmuseum — in a dense, Gothic Revival style that still frames the view down Damrak today. A few minutes' walk east, the Basilica of Saint Nicholas looks older than it is: consecrated only in 1887, it was built the moment Dutch Catholics were finally allowed to construct visible churches again, after losing their original St Nicholas church during the Reformation in 1578. That older church still stands nearby under a different name — the Oude Kerk, Amsterdam's oldest building, founded around 1213 and consecrated in 1306.

The walk continues down Zeedijk, which has an even older job than any of the churches around it: it was built at the start of the 13th century as a literal dike, holding back the Zuiderzee from what was then just a fishing settlement called Aemstelledam. Today the same street runs through Amsterdam's Chinatown and the edge of the red-light district, one of the few places in the city where centuries of land reclamation, immigration and reinvention sit on top of each other without any of it being hidden.

From Zeedijk the route threads past the Oude Kerk bells and along Warmoesstraat before opening onto Damrak, the wide street that leads directly to Dam Square and the Royal Palace — completed in 1665 under architect Jacob van Campen as Amsterdam's city hall, and repurposed as a royal residence only in 1808, when Louis Bonaparte needed somewhere grand enough to live.
