Amsterdam Evening Walk: Beursplein & Beurs van Berlage

Beursplein means exactly what it sounds like — Exchange Square — and this walk starts right where Amsterdam kept its money for most of the 20th century. The square takes its name from Beurs van Berlage, the building that dominates it: a red-brick stock exchange designed by Hendrik Petrus Berlage and built between 1896 and 1903 to replace an older neoclassical exchange that once stood where the De Bijenkorf department store is today.

Berlage's exchange looks almost plain compared to the ornate 19th-century buildings around it, and that was the point. Stripped of the decoration expected of a public building at the time, it is now considered the building that launched Dutch modern architecture, influencing the functionalists and the Amsterdam School that followed. Stock trading itself moved out gradually over the 20th century, and the building's old trading halls are now concert spaces — one of them home to the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra.

From Beursplein the walk crosses into Beursstraat, a short connecting street lined with the kind of small cafés and bars that fill up as the evening trade shifts from tourists photographing the exchange to locals ordering a first round. This stretch has none of the square's architectural weight; it is just an ordinary Amsterdam side street doing what it does most evenings.

The walk ends at Amsterdam Centraal, itself only a few minutes on foot from the old exchange — a reminder that this whole stretch of the centre, station included, was built within a few decades of each other during Amsterdam's late-19th-century expansion, when the city was rebuilding its centre in Berlage and Cuypers' overlapping era of grand civic architecture.
