Journey Timeline
Patras Carnival is the largest in Greece and one of the biggest in Europe, and this walk drops straight into it โ floats, costumes, and crowds moving through the same streets the city rebuilt from ruins two centuries ago.
The carnival's roots trace back to Venetian rule in the 17th century, but its modern form dates to 1829: the first documented event was a grand ball held at the home of a wealthy Patras merchant, in the years just after the Greek War of Independence. Today it draws crowds estimated in the hundreds of thousands, running from mid-January through Clean Monday each year, with this walk recorded on 22 February 2026.
The parade moves down Korinthou Street and through King George I Square โ which, coincidentally, was laid out in that same year, 1829, as part of Stamatis Voulgaris's plan to rebuild central Patras after the war had devastated it. The square has been renamed half a dozen times since; its current name has stuck since 1863. On its northeast side stands the Apollon Theatre, a neoclassical building modeled loosely on Milan's La Scala, designed by Ernst Ziller and completed in 1872 โ a 19th-century backdrop for a parade that gets louder and more colorful every year.
This is what TravelHubCam is here to show you: not a staged festival highlight reel, but what it actually looks like to stand in a 200-year-old square while Greece's biggest carnival passes through it.
