Athens Night Vibes: November Walking Tour

November in Athens doesn't shut the city down the way it does further north — this walk starts with the floodlit Parthenon visible above the rooftops and ends in restaurant terraces still busy after dark, which is less a directing choice than just what an Athens evening looks like in late autumn.

The walk drops into Monastiraki, a neighborhood whose name literally means "little monastery," after a small Orthodox nunnery that once stood on the square during Ottoman rule — the 10th-century Church of the Virgin Mary Pantanassa is what's left of it. The square's more dominant landmark is the Tzistarakis Mosque, built in 1759, whose construction is what originally pulled trade and commerce into the area. The flea market itself is younger: it took shape in the 19th century after Jewish families from Smyrna, the Yusurum family among them, settled here in 1863 as second-hand dealers, and the market they started has run more or less continuously since.

From Monastiraki the walk continues onto Ermou Street, Athens' main pedestrian shopping corridor, past the restaurant crowds and, further along, street musicians playing to the evening foot traffic — the ordinary soundtrack of a city center that doesn't empty out once the shops close.
