Journey Timeline
Kalambaka is easy to treat as a base camp — the town everyone passes through on the way up to the Meteora monasteries — but it has been rebuilding itself under those same rock pillars for over two thousand years.
The site's earliest identity was Aiginion, a Hellenistic-era settlement. By the 10th century it was known as Stagoi, a Byzantine fortress and bishopric — a name the Greek Orthodox Church still uses for the town today. The name Kalambaka arrived six or seven centuries ago, from Turkish, and translates roughly to "mighty fortress." Three names, three eras, one town at the same spot beneath the rocks.
What's walking distance in this video — the residential streets, the shopping street, Pochos Market, the houses that read as traditional — is mostly newer than it looks. Kalambaka was burned to the ground by German forces during the Second World War, and almost everything standing today was rebuilt afterward. It's a town that looks old because it was built to look like what was lost, not because it survived intact.
Above all of it, the actual Meteora pillars are what the panorama here is showing: sandstone columns where monks began settling from the 11th century onward, eventually building two dozen monasteries into the rock faces by the late 15th century. Only four remain active today, and the whole formation has held UNESCO World Heritage status since 1988 — one of the very few sites recognized for both natural and cultural significance.
This is what TravelHubCam is here to show you: not just the postcard view of monasteries on cliffs, but the rebuilt town underneath them that makes the postcard possible.
