Thiseio to Monastiraki: Athens Sunday Morning Walk

Thiseio is named after a mistake nobody ever bothered to correct. Eighteenth-century travelers looking at the ancient temple here noticed sculpted scenes of Theseus on its metopes and assumed it was his tomb, so they started calling it the "Theseion." Archaeologists eventually established that the temple was actually dedicated to Hephaestus, the god of metalworking — but the neighborhood had already taken the wrong name, and kept it.

The temple itself is worth the confusion. Built around 450 BC and designed by Iktinos — the same architect responsible for the Parthenon — it's one of the best-preserved ancient temples anywhere in Greece, largely because it spent over a thousand years, from the 7th century AD until 1834, doing a completely different job: serving as the Orthodox church of Saint George. It was here, in 1834, that a doxology was held to mark the arrival of King Otto and the formal proclamation of Athens as the capital of the newly independent Greek state.

This walk starts among Thiseio's cafés — genuinely local, not built for tourists despite sitting a few minutes from the Acropolis — and continues into Monastiraki, ending at its flea market and the square that anchors it.
