IJplein looks like an ordinary Amsterdam Noord housing estate until you notice how deliberately odd it is — wide American-style blocks, low warehouses, and a scattered, informal layout that has nothing in common with the tight canal-ring streets across the water. It is the work of Rem Koolhaas and OMA, built in the 1980s on former shipyard land for the dockworkers who used to live and work along this stretch of the IJ, and it is now a protected cityscape in its own right.

The ferry terminal here is smaller and quieter than the one by the Eye Museum a little further west — mostly locals crossing for the evening rather than tourists — and the ride itself takes only a few minutes before Amsterdam Centraal comes into full view on the south bank.

Arriving by ferry puts you almost directly opposite the Victoria Hotel, built in 1890 by architect J.F. Henkenhaf in the spot where every arriving train and boat passenger would see it first — a deliberate piece of hotel marketing that still works, since it remains one of the most recognisable buildings on Damrak more than a century later.

Damrak itself used to be water. It was the original mouth of the Amstel, the river that gave Amsterdam its name, and Amsterdam's busiest harbour from the 14th century until 1672, with seagoing ships docked along its quays all the way to Dam Square. Most of that harbour was filled in during the 19th century, mainly in 1845 and 1883, leaving only a small stretch of water near Centraal Station as a trace of the original inlet.
