Journey Timeline
The Metropolitan Cathedral this walk passes near the end took twenty years and the demolition of dozens of other churches to build. King Otto and Queen Amalia laid its cornerstone on Christmas Day, 1842, and construction dragged on so long — running out of money entirely between 1843 and 1846 — that it went through three architects, starting with Theophil Hansen, the same Danish architect behind the Academy of Athens. Workers used marble salvaged from 72 demolished churches to raise its walls, and when it finally opened in 1862, it was dedicated to the Annunciation — the same feast day, coincidentally, that Greece's Independence Day already shares.
Winter is when this walk happens to catch Athens, and the season barely registers: outdoor cafés stay open, street musicians still play along Ermou, and the mild Mediterranean climate makes December-to-February a genuinely reasonable time to walk the city center rather than avoid it. The route passes ordinary commercial texture too — an old store, a chain outlet, one visibly abandoned building — the unremarkable backdrop that a twenty-year cathedral project and a marble-hungry construction site eventually settled into.
This is what TravelHubCam is here to show you: not a single-season postcard, but a Byzantine-neoclassical cathedral that outlasted three architects and a funding crisis, sitting in a city that doesn't stop for winter.
